Poole Harbour Canoe Club is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation - Registration # 1152531
PHCC takes great pride in the work it does with Junior (8-18 yrs) members of the club and is constantly looking for ways to improve their experience with us and to broaden the range of opportunities they are given. The juniors have a full program of events including river running, K1 training (and competitions) and surfing. There are also other opportunities for Juniors to make the transition to senior paddles.
As well as the Junior Sessions on Tuesdays at Lake Pier the juniors have their own program of events most weekends throughout the year, including race meetings -
and in the winter separate sessions at the Ferndown Leisure Centre pool prior to the Adult members’ rolling and practice sessions.
Non Junior-Specific Paddling Opportunities
During the winter months the Wednesday Club Night takes place at Ferndown Leisure Centre in the pool. The open member session is from 8.15pm till 9pm and is open to all members including juniors to practice their skills in a warm safe environment. Coaches are always on hand to offer advice and support.
During the Summer months the Wednesday Club Night takes place at Lake Pier, Hamworthy. Every week a coach will lead a novice paddle which will either stay near the beach at Lake Pier or go on a very short trip depending on the conditions and make-up of the group on the night. This is an ideal opportunity for you to paddle with your child under the watchful eye and with the support of a club coach or leader.

Within the clubs regular activities there are plenty of other opportunities for them to paddle and develop their skills.
On the second Friday of every month we also have an additional open pool session at Ferndown Leisure Centre where any member of the club - young or older, is welcome to come and practice their skills.
Whilst there is a dedicated junior polo session every month, for those junior members keen to play more there is a monthly polo session on the second Friday of the month at Ferndown Leisure Centre. This takes place from 8.40pm till 9.40pm and is £3.50 to play. The adult players are very adept at tempering their more boisterous play when tackling junior players and it is always enjoyed by those juniors who attend.
Ladies only Paddles
A new opportunity this year for our more competent junior members is to join the Ladies (and juniors!) Only paddles. These paddles will be using Sea Kayaks and are intended to be shorter and at a more leisurely pace than many other club sea kayak paddles. Look out for the emails advertising these paddles.
New Paddler Sessions
New paddler sessions take place on the last Sunday of the month from April end
to September end. These paddles are designed to welcome new members and existing members who are still feeling ‘wobbly’ in a boat and don’t want to paddle too far. Junior members are always welcome to attend these paddles and it is a great opportunity for you to get on the water with them whether you have paddling experience or not. Look out for the emails advertising these paddles or contact Peter Hobby for more information using the web-mail box below.
British Canoeing Star Award Courses
For those junior members aged 14 and up the British Canoeing Star Award courses are likely to be more suitable than the junior specific Paddlepower programme. https://www.britishcanoeing.org.uk/go-canoeing/build-my-skills/#star-awards
During the winter we also run support stroke and rolling courses from 9pm till 10pm at Ferndown Leisure Centre. All these courses are put on by the clubs volunteer coaching community, are advertised by email and can be booked onto through the clubs webcollect booking system.
For the more experienced juniors
The more experienced and skilled paddlers are usually welcome to join in with any of the club paddles that are within their personal skill and endurance levels.
Look out for emails that are put out by club trip leaders of all disciplines and contact those folk directly for more information and to find out whether it would be an appropriate paddle for the junior member.
